young composers concert
TICKETS AVAILABLE THROUGH GOLDEN HORNET

To honor the legacy of Leonard Bernstein's passion for youth arts education, B100A has teamed up with Golden Hornet, Austin Chamber Music Center, and KMFA in supporting The 3rd Annual Young Composer Concert.   For the last several months, Austin-area composers, ages 12-18, have been composing original pieces under the guidance of a professional mentor and as part of a collective production team.  For the concert, a professional ensemble of artists from Austin Chamber Music Center will perform the student pieces at the Young Composer Concert.    KMFA, our B100A media sponsor, will broadcast the composers' work as part of the Bernstein Centennial celebration.   To learn more about this project, visit Golden Hornet.

Interest Session #2
REFLECTIONS
Free admission
BULLOCK TEXAS STATE HISTORY MUSEUM (MAP)

With its influence from the Civil Rights movement and Vietnam War, MASS was borne in a time of social strife.  The theme of finding hope, which is embedded throughout the work, can be considered Bernstein’s own personal hope of navigating the troubled world he saw around him.  This session will speak to both the world events at the time of the crafting of MASS and connect it to the current parallel of world events in our own time in 2018.   It will further explore ways that we might continue to find hope as we navigate our own modern and, often times, troubled world.

INTEREST SESSION #3
A CROSSROAD OF TWO FAITHS
Free admission
bullock texas state HISTORY museum (MAP)

This interest session looks at the inspiration for MASS from Bernstein's personal history and study of Judaism and the Catholic faith and how these factors also impacted his other compositions.  Our guest panel will include Rabbi Neil Blumofe (Congregation Agudas Achim), Fr. Larry Covington (St. Theresa Catholic Church), and Peter Bay (Austin Symphony Orchestra) with moderator, Pamela Benson Owens (Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary).
